Charter
The International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture, and Urbanism (INTBAU) is an interactive network of individuals and institutions whose objective is to create more humane and harmonious places and buildings that respect local traditions. In traditions, we recognize the lessons of history; they enrich our lives, and through them, we bequeath an important legacy to the future. Local, regional, and national traditions provide communities with the opportunity to preserve their individuality in the face of globalization. Through tradition, we can preserve our identity and counteract social alienation. People should enjoy the freedom to maintain their own traditions. Traditional buildings and places remain in balance with the natural environment and with the society that has shaped them over generations. They improve our quality of life while still reflecting modern society, as the modernity they offer lies beyond the pursuit of novelty, focusing instead on achieving a better future. INTBAU brings together those who design, produce, maintain, study, or enjoy traditional building, architecture, and places. We will gain strength, transcendence, and erudition through association, action, and the propagation of our principles. Agreed upon by the INTBAU Steering Committee in October 2001.
